Many windows are what people often call “double paned” or “double glazed,” what we call Insulated Glass Units. These units are comprised of two panes of glass with a spacer between them. They are sealed most often with air, but occasionally with other gasses to increase thermal insulation.
When the seal breaks, either due to a crack in the glass or a tear in the spacer lining, the interior of the unit can become foggy. These seals cannot be repaired or re-insulated; the entire unit must be replaced.
Rex Glass and Mirror does not provide same-day, emergency, or board-up services. Our work is all custom-fit for your window, which takes time. Rex Glass does not carry any stock units for immediate pickup or install, because windows do not come in standard or stock sizes.
Lead times can vary for insulated glass units depending on size, shape, glass type, and other factors, but it is typically a matter of weeks, not days or hours.
If your glass pane is shattered or cracked but still holding its shape, Rex recommends using packing tape to help hold it in place in the meantime.
Our process includes an initial visit for assessment and pricing, a field measurement where we send our glaziers to get an exact size, and of course, our final installation visit.
Each visit is a necessary step to ensure that we can procure the proper materials you need for the perfect window installation.
Rex can replace window glass in wood, fiberglass, vinyl, and aluminum frames.
Absolutely. If you are comfortable removing your window sash, or you have a contractor who can do so, you can bring your window in to any of our showrooms to order new glass. Keep in mind that for this option, you may have to leave your window with us for a time; we can only do these measurements same-day when we have an experienced technician on site. Call ahead for the best time to bring your sash.
You can take your window with you after measurement, and return with it for installation once we have all the materials. If you find it more convenient for Rex to store your window, we can keep it on site until it is ready for pick-up.
You may choose to take your own measurements and call an order into any of our showrooms. Lead times apply. Rex will not, however, install any unit into a window sash if we did not take the initial measurement.
Framing, environment, glass makeup, and a host of other considerations can change pricing. Rex requires an in-person consultation to give any firm pricing on window glass. This consultation is free and can be booked by calling our Kennedy Township showroom. For over-the-counter sales where Rex is installing into the sash, firm pricing can only be given with the window sash present.
Unfortunately, Rex cannot fix screens, mechanical issues, or framing issues. If window frames show wood rot, we request a carpenter or contractor come in to fix the framing before we are able to install the new glass. Additionally, Rex will not provide any touch-up paint that may be required before or after installation.
We will do our best to match your window. However, due to changes in manufacturing and disparities between vendors, it is not always realistic to expect an exact match. Low-E coatings, for instance, can often vary in appearance based on lighting or environment. Just as custom paint colors can be hard to reproduce, some custom-painted window grills may not be replaceable. While framing, grids, and stops can be reused, interior glass window grills cannot, so the replacements may be off by a slight shade. Rex will always do our best to provide a replacement that is as close as possible to your original.
Building codes may also affect our ability to match your glass. We must uphold current code regulations, even if the home was built before the code came into place. This means, when we are replacing glass in an area of the home that requires safety glass due to code, we sometimes need to replace certain glass types or patterns with tempered glass, even if the original was not tempered, and even if the pattern is not available in tempered glass.
Rex provides a variety of safety, decorative, privacy, and UV-protective films. There are many shades and patterns to fit your specific aesthetic and needs. UV films come in many shades, each offering a different level of protection. Each of our showrooms have a selection of film displays and samples.
For window film installation, a clean environment is required. Rex will clean the windows, to the best of our abilities, before any filming project to ensure no dust or dirt is caught under the film. However, we recommend film installation after any remodeling or construction projects have been completed, as ambient dust can contribute to an imperfect Installation.
After any window glass or film installation, Rex recommends waiting 24 hours before touching or operating your window.
